About Wyoming Borough
Wyoming is a borough in Luzerne County on the west bank of the Susquehanna River, about five miles north of Wilkes-Barre. Its name carries over from the Wyoming Valley, from the Delaware locative M'cheuwaming, meaning roughly "at the great flats." The borough incorporated in 1885.
The area is best known for the Battle of Wyoming on July 3, 1778, when Loyalist and Native forces under Major John Butler defeated Patriot militia from the valley. Between 300 and 400 defenders took the field against roughly 1,100 British, Loyalist and Native troops, and Colonel Denison's own return counted 302 of them killed in what became known as the Wyoming Massacre. The Wyoming Monument, an obelisk begun in 1833 and completed in 1843 over the dead, stands in the borough and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Wyoming grew through the anthracite era as a valley town and today is a settled residential borough of about 3,100 people. It anchors the west side of the Greater Pittston area along Wyoming Avenue. Its housing is largely older single-family and frame homes at prices typical of the valley's smaller boroughs.
