About Scranton
Scranton grew from a settlement on the Lackawanna River, where Isaac Tripp built a home in 1771. The Scranton brothers arrived in 1840 and founded the ironworks as Scrantons, Grant and Co., which was reorganized as the Lackawanna Iron and Coal Company in 1853, and the city takes its name from brothers George and Selden Scranton. It incorporated as a borough in 1856 and as a city in 1866. It is the seat of Lackawanna County and the largest city in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Anthracite coal and railroads built Scranton. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad, whose corporate offices were in New York, built its main yards, locomotive shops, and passenger terminal here, and Scranton was the operating heart of the line for more than a century. Scranton put electric streetcars on its streets on November 30, 1886, running between downtown and Green Ridge. A state historical marker calls it the first street car system in the country built entirely for operation by electric power, and it gave Scranton the name the Electric City. Immigrant families from across Europe filled its neighborhoods during the coal era.

The city was also the setting for the television series The Office.
Scranton covers about 25 square miles along the Lackawanna River, roughly 120 road miles from New York City and 125 from Philadelphia. Its population was 76,328 at the 2020 census. Dense neighborhoods of coal-era frame houses and brick rowhomes keep it one of the more affordable small cities in the Northeast, with steady demand from students, hospital workers, and commuters.
