About Jenkins Township
Jenkins Township was formed from part of Pittston Township on June 24, 1852, in Luzerne County. It is named in honor of Colonel John Jenkins, the Revolutionary War officer and surveyor whose family came to the Wyoming Valley in 1769. Settlement inside the township itself began about 1794.
Anthracite coal became the township's main industry after early years of farming and logging. Its village of Port Griffith, named for a stockholder of the Pennsylvania Coal Company, was the site of the Knox Mine Disaster on January 22, 1959, when the Susquehanna River broke into the mine below and killed 12 men. The disaster ended deep anthracite mining across much of the Wyoming Valley, though a few deep operations ran into the early 1970s.

The township takes in the villages of Ewen, Inkerman, Old Boston, Port Blanchard, Port Griffith, and Sebastopol, and covers about 14 square miles along the east side of the Susquehanna. Its population was 4,283 in 2020. Housing ranges from coal-era village homes to newer construction, a mix of settings just outside Pittston.
