About Moscow

Moscow was settled around 1830 by the Reverend Peter Rupert, a Lutheran minister who built a sawmill on the site in 1831. The borough is named for Moscow, Russia, by local tradition. It incorporated as a borough in 1908.

Lumber and farming shaped the early economy. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad ran through Moscow and built passenger and freight stations in 1904. The restored station now houses a railroad museum and serves excursion trains from Steamtown.

Moscow is the commercial hub of the North Pocono area and home to the North Pocono Public Library, with Roaring Brook running through the borough. It sits about 11 miles southeast of Scranton in Lackawanna County, at an elevation of roughly 1,700 feet in the Pocono foothills. Its population was 2,039 at the 2020 census. It draws commuters who want a small-town setting close to the city.
