About Dunmore
Dunmore was settled in 1816 and incorporated as a borough in 1862. It was renamed about 1840 for the family of the Earl of Dunmore, after Charles Augustus Murray, a son of the fifth earl, was expected to bankroll a railroad here.
The Pennsylvania Coal Company transformed the town in the late 1840s, and anthracite, brick, stone, and silk carried its growth into the 20th century. The Lackawanna Railroad climbed out of the borough along Roaring Brook and dropped through Nay Aug Gorge into Scranton. Gertrude Hawk Chocolates, started in a Scranton kitchen in 1936, moved to the borough in 1959 and is still based here.

Penn State Scranton is located in Dunmore, and part of Marywood University lies within its borders. NFL coach Vic Fangio is a Dunmore native. Baseball Hall of Fame umpire Nestor Chylak, born up the valley, lived and died in Dunmore, and NASA astronaut Paul Richards, born in Scranton, grew up here. The Keystone Sanitary Landfill, one of the largest in Pennsylvania at about 1,000 acres, spans Dunmore and neighboring Throop.
Dunmore adjoins Scranton on the east and northeast, in Lackawanna County, covering about 9 square miles. Its population was 14,042 at the 2020 census. As an inner-ring neighbor of the city, it offers a mix of coal-era homes and postwar housing with quick access to downtown.
