About Dunmore

Dunmore was settled in 1835 and incorporated as a borough in 1862. It is named for Dunmore, a village near Falkirk in Scotland.

The Pennsylvania Coal Company transformed the town in the late 1840s, and anthracite, brick, stone, and silk carried its growth into the 20th century. The Lackawanna Railroad ran through the Nay Aug Gorge into Scranton. Gertrude Hawk Chocolates was founded here in 1936 and is still based in the borough.

Penn State Scranton is located in Dunmore, and part of Marywood University lies within its borders. Natives include Baseball Hall of Fame umpire Nestor Chylak, NFL coach Vic Fangio, and NASA astronaut Paul Richards. The Keystone Sanitary Landfill, the largest in Pennsylvania, operates in the borough.

Dunmore adjoins Scranton on the east and northeast, in Lackawanna County, covering about 9 square miles. Its population was 14,042 at the 2020 census. As an inner-ring neighbor of the city, it offers a mix of coal-era homes and postwar housing with quick access to downtown.
