About Moosic

Moosic incorporated as a borough on December 9, 1898, from land that had been part of Lackawanna Township. The name is believed to come from a Lenape word meaning elk place.

Coal mining was the borough's first industry, worked through a string of collieries along the valley. The Moosic Powder Company made black powder here, and DuPont later ran the powder mills for close to a century. The economy today runs on light manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, and retail.

Moosic is home to PNC Field, where the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders play as the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. Montage Mountain offers skiing, a waterpark, and a major outdoor concert venue. The historic Rocky Glen amusement park operated here for a century until the late 1980s. Congressman Matthew Cartwright is among its residents.

Moosic sits about 3 miles south of Scranton along the Lackawanna River, in Lackawanna County, next to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. Its population was 5,959 at the 2020 census, and it has been one of the faster-growing communities in the valley. Newer subdivisions mix with coal-era housing near the Montage corridor.
