About Avoca

Avoca is a borough in Luzerne County, set between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton about six miles southwest of downtown Scranton. It incorporated in 1871 as Pleasant Valley. The borough was renamed Avoca in 1889 to match the name of its post office.

Coal mining was the mainstay of the local economy until the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster ended most deep operations across the northern valley. Twenty-nine of the 64 people killed in the 1888 Mud Run train wreck were from here, when the borough was still called Pleasant Valley, the largest group from any one town.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport was built between 1945 and its dedication on June 1, 1947. The airfield lies mostly in neighboring Pittston Township, with its northern end in Moosic and further airport land in Dupont, and it borders Avoca on the east. Avoca's population was 2,507 in 2020, down from a peak of 4,950 in 1920.

The borough covers about one square mile of mostly older frame homes. Its central location, minutes from the airport and Interstate 81, makes it a convenient and affordable spot between the two cities.
