About Factoryville
Factoryville was settled around 1800 by Robert Reynolds and Stephen Capwell, families from Rhode Island. Its name comes from an early textile mill built near the town center during the War of 1812 era, which ran a year or two and failed; the 1880 county history calls it a cotton mill and Espenshade a woolen one, and the place was long known simply as the Factory. The borough incorporated on November 12, 1883.
Factoryville is the birthplace of Christy Mathewson, born here in 1880. He became one of baseball's early stars, a Hall of Fame pitcher for the New York Giants known as "The Big Six." Keystone College, founded in 1868, sits just outside the borough in adjacent La Plume.

The borough marks Christy Mathewson Day each August with a parade and a 6-kilometer race, a nod to his nickname. The population was 1,165 at the 2020 census. Routes 6 and 11 run through town along a former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad corridor.
Factoryville sits about 15 miles northwest of Scranton, close enough to commute and priced below the city's suburbs. The college and highway access give this small Wyoming County borough steadier demand than most of the rural county.
