About Noxen
Noxen Township was formed in 1895 in the southern corner of Wyoming County. The village of Noxen sits on Bowman Creek in the North Mountain country. The township population was 917 at the 2020 census.
Noxen became a center for the tanning industry in the early 1890s. Tanneries used hemlock bark from the surrounding forests to turn hides into leather. Railroads opened the area to lumbering, ice-cutting, and tanning. The Noxen tannery ran until 1961.

The Noxen School was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The township covers about 29 square miles of mountain and forest near North Mountain and state game lands, with Ricketts Glen State Park a short drive to the southwest. This is a recreational and land market. Buyers come for acreage, hunting, and cabins, and for a quiet setting well off the main highways.
