About Dalton
Dalton was first known as Bailey Hollow, after the pioneer Bailey families. It incorporated as a borough in 1895 from North Abington Township. The name Dalton was already in use by 1854, when the post office opened; its origin is not recorded.
Farming and lumbering were the earliest industries. The Leggetts Gap Railroad, which became the northern division of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, opened past Dalton in 1851, and a station built in the 1860s spurred the village's growth. The Northern Electric trolley later served the town as well.

Dalton sits about 8 miles north of Scranton in Lackawanna County, in the Abingtons, and is served by the Lackawanna Trail School District. Its population was 1,284 at the 2020 census. A compact downtown and quiet residential streets define this small suburban borough.
