About Mehoopany

Mehoopany lies along the North Branch of the Susquehanna River where Mehoopany Creek enters, in western Wyoming County. The town was laid out in 1818 and takes its name from the creek, which Donehoo traces to M'hobbenisink, place of wild potatoes. The township population was 899 at the 2020 census.

The Procter & Gamble paper products plant, which began production in 1966, stands just across the line in Washington Township. It is P&G's largest manufacturing site in the United States and makes Charmin toilet paper, Bounty towels, and Pampers and Luvs diapers. The plant employs more than 2,000 people and anchors the economy of the entire county.

The plant runs under a continuous roof more than a half-mile long and has been described as possibly the largest single source of toilet paper in the country. Routes 6 and 87 serve the area. Mehoopany sits about seven miles west of Tunkhannock.

Housing demand here is steadier than the surrounding countryside because of the plant payroll. Buyers find rural homes, river frontage, and open land in a working landscape of farms and forest.
