About Lake Ariel

Lake Ariel is a village in Wayne County, split between Lake and Salem Townships. The Jones family first settled the area in 1822, and it went by The Stock Farm, then Jonestown and Jones Pond, before taking the name of a local post office called Ariel.

The Pennsylvania Coal Company gravity railroad brought workers and business to the settlement in the 19th century.

Lake Ariel Park was a popular resort from the late 1800s into the early 1950s, with a pavilion, a waterslide, and a roller coaster called the Cyclone. The park closed in the early 1950s. The community sits about 15 miles east of Scranton and today mixes lakefront vacation homes with year-round residents.
