About Lake Ariel
Lake Ariel is a village in Wayne County, in Lake Township. The Jones family settled here in 1803, and the place went by Jonestown and Jones Pond before taking the name of the Ariel post office, which opened in 1851.
The village grew up around Plane No. 19 on the light track of the Pennsylvania Coal Company's gravity railroad.

Lake Ariel Park, an amusement park with a wooden roller coaster called the Cyclone, ran from 1928 until a hurricane wrecked it in 1955. The community sits about 15 miles east of Scranton and today mixes lakefront vacation homes with year-round residents.
