About Thornhurst
Thornhurst is a township and village in Lackawanna County, on the northern edge of the Poconos rather than in Monroe or Carbon. Isaac Lewis settled the area in 1842. The township was created in 1878 from Buck Township and named Lehigh Township in 1880 for the Lehigh River, and was renamed Thornhurst in 1996 to avoid confusion with another Lehigh Township in Wayne County.
Lumber drove the early economy, with hemlock bark cut for the tanneries. Jay Gould operated a tannery in this area in the late 1850s, and the profits helped build the fortune he later turned into a railroad and Wall Street empire.

Township history records that the Fire of Mud Run swept the region in May 1875 and ended large-scale lumbering for years. Thornhurst covers about 23 square miles of forest and state game lands with a small year-round population near 1,000. It sits roughly 20 miles from Wilkes-Barre, 25 from Scranton, and 30 from Stroudsburg. The market is rural and recreation-oriented, with second homes among the woods.
