About Tobyhanna

Tobyhanna sits in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe County, on the Pocono Plateau at roughly 1,900 feet. The village grew up around 1840 as Naglesville, for George Nagle, who opened the first store and a water-powered sawmill here, and was renamed Tobyhanna Mills in 1865 from the Lenape word Topi-hanne, meaning alder streams, for the creek that runs through it.

Timber, a clothespin factory, and a silk mill drove the early economy. Ice harvesting from the local lakes ran from about 1900 into the 1930s, cutting blocks that shipped east by rail. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad reached the village in 1856.

The town's anchor is Tobyhanna Army Depot. The Army acquired the land in 1912 and 1913 for artillery training, and the depot was formally established on February 1, 1953. It overhauls electronics, radar, and communications systems and employs about 3,100 people, making it, by the Army's own account, the largest industrial employer in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Tobyhanna State Park lies just north of the village. Its 5,440 acres surround the 170-acre Tobyhanna Lake. Interstate 380 links the area to Scranton, about 20 miles to the northwest. Housing mixes full-time residents, the depot workforce, and vacation homes.
