About Nicholson
Nicholson was incorporated as a borough on August 23, 1875. It was named for John Nicholson, who served as Pennsylvania's comptroller general in the late 1700s. The population was 696 at the 2020 census.
The borough is known for the Tunkhannock Viaduct, also called the Nicholson Bridge. The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad completed the concrete railroad viaduct in 1915. It stands 240 feet high and stretches 2,375 feet across the Tunkhannock Creek valley on ten arched spans. At its completion it was the largest concrete bridge in the world.

The viaduct was named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1976 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It still carries Norfolk Southern freight trains and towers over the small Main Street below. Nicholson sits along Route 11 near Interstate 81, about 20 miles north of Scranton.
This is a small, affordable borough in northeastern Wyoming County. Homes here draw buyers who want rural quiet with quick highway access to Scranton and Tunkhannock.
