About Nesquehoning
Nesquehoning is a borough in Carbon County, west of the Lehigh River. It incorporated in 1963 after separating from Mauch Chunk Township. The name is of Lenape origin, commonly translated as at the black lick, for a mineral lick where animals gathered.
The town was built on anthracite coal, tied to the Lehigh Coal and Navigation operations that worked the surrounding hills.

In the modern era Nesquehoning was home to KME, a maker of fire trucks and specialty vehicles that employed more than 350 people. REV Group, which bought KME in 2016, moved production to its other plants, and the Nesquehoning factory built its last truck in March 2022. Routes 209, 54, and 93 serve the borough, which sits about three miles west of Jim Thorpe. Coal-era homes make it one of the more affordable footholds in the Poconos.
