About Tunkhannock

Tunkhannock was founded in 1841 and sits on the North Branch of the Susquehanna River at the mouth of Tunkhannock Creek. The name comes from the Lenape term Ptuk'hanna'unk, meaning "bend in the river place," a reference to the sharp turn the river makes nearby.

When Wyoming County was formed from Luzerne County in 1842, Tunkhannock was chosen as the county seat, and it has served as the courthouse town ever since. The population was 1,766 at the 2020 census. Lumbering drove the early economy. Today the borough is the commercial and government hub of a rural county.

The Tunkhannock Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and covers blocks of 19th-century commercial and residential buildings. The restored Dietrich Theater anchors Tioga Street. Routes 6 and 29 meet here, and Scranton lies about 28 miles to the southeast.

Tunkhannock is the retail, medical, and service center for Wyoming County. Much of the area workforce is tied to the Procter & Gamble plant in nearby Mehoopany. The borough offers small-town housing at the center of a land, farm, and recreational market in the Endless Mountains.
