About Lehighton
Lehighton is the second most populous borough in Carbon County, after Palmerton, set on the west bank of the Lehigh River. The site began as the Moravian mission Gnadenhutten, built in 1746 to serve Mohican and Delaware converts and, by the state's own marker, the first white settlement in present-day Carbon County. The present name comes from the Lehigh River, and the borough was incorporated on January 2, 1866.
On November 24, 1755, a raid destroyed the mission in one of the early events of the French and Indian War, and its victims are buried in the Lehighton Cemetery. The town that followed drew its power from the river, running silk and lace mills, shirt factories, foundries, and stoneworks.

The Lehigh Valley Railroad's Packerton shops and yards, just up the river in Mahoning Township, employed much of the town, and post-war rail cutbacks cost Lehighton those jobs. The Mahoning Drive-In, opened in 1949 nearby, still runs as a retro-film venue. The abstract painter Franz Kline, born in Wilkes-Barre, moved here with his family and graduated from Lehighton High School. Lehighton sits about four miles southeast of Jim Thorpe and some 37 miles south of Wilkes-Barre, an affordable river borough on the anthracite edge of the Poconos.
