Lehighton is the most populous borough in Carbon County, set on the west bank of the Lehigh River. The site began as the Moravian mission Gnadenhutten, established in 1746 to serve the Lenape. The present name comes from the Lehigh River.
On November 24, 1755, an attack destroyed the mission in one of the early events of the French and Indian War. The town that followed drew its power from the river, running silk and lace mills, shirt factories, foundries, and stoneworks.
The Lehigh Valley Railroad ran major operations through Lehighton, and post-war rail cutbacks cost the town jobs. The Mahoning Drive-In, opened in 1949 nearby, still runs as a retro-film venue. The abstract painter Franz Kline grew up in the area. Lehighton sits about three miles south of Jim Thorpe and some 37 miles south of Wilkes-Barre, an affordable river borough on the anthracite edge of the Poconos.
