About Dickson City
Dickson City grew up around coal drifts opened in 1859 and incorporated as a borough in 1875 under the name of Thomas Dickson, president of the Delaware and Hudson Railroad. The postal authorities added City to distinguish it from other Dickson post offices. Its Priceburg section, named for landowner Eli K. Price and settled largely by German immigrants, developed later.
Anthracite mining drove the borough's early growth, and its population peaked at 12,395 in 1930. Built largely on reclaimed coal land, Dickson City has since become the retail hub of the Lackawanna Valley.

The borough anchors the region's shopping corridor along Business Route 6, beside the Viewmont Mall on the Scranton line and surrounded by big-box stores and plazas. The historic Circle Drive-In Theater still operates in the borough. Dickson City is part of the Mid Valley School District, formed in 1969.
