About Carbondale
Carbondale grew from the coal discovered by brothers William and Maurice Wurts in 1814. The settlement took the name Carbondale, meaning valley of coal, by the mid-1820s and was chartered as a city on March 15, 1851. It is the oldest city in Lackawanna County.
Carbondale is called the Pioneer City. A state historical marker records the first underground mine opening here in June 1831, and the Delaware and Hudson Gravity Railroad, built in 1828 and 1829, hauled coal over the mountain to the canal at Honesdale. The Stourbridge Lion made its trial run on the Honesdale end of that line in August 1829, the first full-size steam locomotive to run on a commercial track in the country, but it proved too heavy for the wooden rails and never entered service.

The Carbondale City Hall and Courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the Carbondale Historical Society preserves the city's mining record. Terry Pegula, owner of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres, was born and raised in Carbondale, and Johnson and Johnson co-founder Robert Wood Johnson was born just north of the city at Crystal Lake, in Fell Township, in 1845.
Carbondale sits about 15 miles northeast of Scranton at the head of the Lackawanna River valley, in Lackawanna County. Its population was 8,828 at the 2020 census. Grand coal-era buildings and affordable frame homes anchor the northern end of the valley.
