About Duryea
Duryea sits just above the junction of the Lackawanna and Susquehanna Rivers in Luzerne County, about seven miles southwest of Scranton. Zebulon Marcy settled the area in 1769 and built the first cabin the following year. The borough incorporated on May 28, 1901, and is named for Hiram Duryea, a Civil War general and landowner tied to the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad.
Anthracite coal and silk mills drove the borough's growth, with three large collieries operating in and around Duryea. Mining ended after the Knox Mine Disaster of January 22, 1959, which broke through beneath the Susquehanna nearby.

The Susquehanna runs along Duryea's western edge and the Lackawanna passes through the borough. Its population was 5,036 in 2020. The housing stock is largely coal-era frame and brick homes, an affordable option close to both Pittston and the Scranton job market.
