About Dupont

Dupont is a borough in the Greater Pittston area of Luzerne County, earlier known as Smithville. It incorporated in 1917. The name is usually traced to the DuPont family, whose powder works supplied the blasting powder used in the region's mines, though a local account credits an assistant postmaster of the same name.

Coal mining supported the borough through the first half of the 20th century. The borough covers about 1.6 square miles and had 2,539 residents in 2020.
