About Wilkes-Barre Township

Wilkes-Barre Township was one of the five original townships laid out by Connecticut settlers in 1769 and shares the name honoring John Wilkes and Isaac Barré. It wraps around the southeast side of the city of Wilkes-Barre in a strip roughly one mile by three.

Coal mining ran through the township's history, and the Laurel Run mine fire started within its bounds in 1915. In the decades since mining ended, the township has become the retail center of the Wyoming Valley.
