About Wilkes-Barre Township
Wilkes-Barre Township was one of the five townships the Susquehanna Company resolved to lay out on December 28, 1768 and shares the name honoring John Wilkes and Isaac Barré. It wraps around the southeast side of the city of Wilkes-Barre in a strip roughly one mile by three.
Coal mining ran through the township's history, and the Laurel Run mine fire started in 1915 in neighboring Laurel Run, a borough set off from the township in 1881. In the decades since mining ended, the township has become the retail center of the Wyoming Valley.

The Wyoming Valley Mall, Arena Hub Plaza, Wilkes-Barre Township Marketplace, and the Mohegan Arena at Casey Plaza, home of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, all sit in the township. An EF2 tornado tore through the commercial district on June 13, 2018.
The township had 3,213 residents in 2020. Its small residential base is mostly older homes, and its economy leans on retail and entertainment more than on housing.
