About West Hazleton
West Hazleton's borough charter was drawn on March 12, 1887, and it was set off from Hazle Township as a separate municipality in 1889. The name is directional, marking the community just west of the city of Hazleton. Its 2020 population was 5,163.
Like its larger neighbor, West Hazleton grew as an anthracite mining town before shifting to manufacturing and commerce after the coal era. It shares the high ground of the greater Hazleton plateau.
