About Waverly

Waverly was settled by Connecticut families in the late 1700s and was first called Abington Center. It incorporated as a borough in 1854 and took the name Waverly from Sir Walter Scott's popular novel. The community gave up its charter about 1920 and merged into Abington Township, which voters renamed Waverly Township in 2010, adopting that name officially in 2011.

Waverly grew during the mid-19th century with foundries and shops, then quieted after the railroad bypassed it in 1880. In the mid-1800s it was a stop on the Underground Railroad, and freedom seekers who settled here built an AME church that still stands.
