About Throop

Throop incorporated as a borough in 1894. It is named for Dr. Benjamin Henry Throop, a prominent early Scranton physician.

Coal mining and silk manufacturing were the borough's main industries. The Price-Pancoast Colliery fire in 1911 killed 72 miners, one of the worst disasters in the northern anthracite field.
