About Swoyersville
Swoyersville was part of Kingston Township, which was incorporated in 1790, and became its own borough in 1888. It was first called Swoyerville, named for mine owner John Henry Swoyer, and residents later voted to add the letter s, making it Swoyersville.
Coal ran the local economy through the 19th and 20th centuries. Most mines closed in the 1950s after the Knox Mine Disaster, though colliery work continued into the 1960s. A large coal-ash bank still stands in the borough, and Hurricane Agnes flooded the low ground along the Susquehanna in 1972.

NFL defensive end and placekicker Lou Michaels and major-league pitcher Harry Dorish were born in Swoyersville. The borough had 5,021 residents in 2020. It sits in the Wyoming Valley just north of Wilkes-Barre, and its housing is chiefly coal-era homes and doubles at affordable prices.
