About Sugarloaf
Sugarloaf Township was established in 1809, carved from Nescopeck Township, and named for cone-shaped Sugarloaf Mountain in the valley. Its 2020 population was 3,846.
The township wraps entirely around the borough of Conyngham and sits in the Conyngham Valley just northwest of Hazleton. Penn State Hazleton, founded in 1934 and on its Highacres site since 1948, stands in its southeast corner.

The valley was the site of the Sugarloaf Massacre on September 11, 1780, when a colonial militia detachment was ambushed on ground that is now Conyngham borough. The Valley Country Club is located in the township.
Sugarloaf is part of the Hazleton Area School District and functions as an upscale suburban and rural area above the city. Housing ranges from valley subdivisions to homes on acreage, drawing buyers who want a country setting close to Hazleton.
