About Sugar Notch

Sugar Notch was incorporated as a borough on April 3, 1867, after being set off from Hanover Township. It was named for the sugar maple trees that grew around the gap where it sits.

Sugar Notch was a coal mining community through the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the Lehigh and Susquehanna Railroad was built past it in 1869 to move anthracite.

A Roosevelt memorial was dedicated in the borough on July 31, 1948 by Eleanor Roosevelt. Sugar Notch had 1,001 residents in 2020 and lies just south of Wilkes-Barre. Its housing is coal-era homes and doubles at affordable prices.
