About Shickshinny
Shickshinny was settled in 1782 and incorporated as a borough on November 30, 1861. Its name comes from Shickshinny Creek and is of Native American origin. Sources disagree on the meaning, offering translations from 'fine stream' to 'five mountains' for the ridges around the town.
The borough sits on the west bank of the Susquehanna River, downriver and southwest of Wilkes-Barre, at the mouth of the creek. The 2020 population was 632.

Shickshinny had a 19th-century economy of coal, foundries, and mills. Major League catcher and executive Carl Sawatski was born in the borough, and actress Krysten Ritter was raised on a cattle farm just outside it. The nearby Mocanaqua Loop Trail overlooks the town from across the river.
This is a small riverside coal-era borough. Housing is older and affordable, a mix of frame homes on the valley floor and hillsides. It appeals to buyers wanting low prices and river access southwest of the Wyoming Valley.
