Roaring Brook Township was formed on May 24, 1871. It takes its name from Roaring Brook, the stream that runs through it, once called Nay Aug from a Native American word meaning noisy.
Both the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western and the Erie railroads followed the stream's course. The Roaring Brook watershed has long supplied drinking water to the Lackawanna Valley, with reservoirs including the Elmhurst Reservoir.
The township wraps around neighboring Elmhurst Township and lies near Lake Scranton, a reservoir with a popular walking loop. It sits just east of Scranton and Dunmore in Lackawanna County, in wooded terrain above the valley. Its population was 2,271 at the 2020 census. Single-family homes on large wooded lots make it a quiet commuter setting close to the city.
