About Plymouth
Plymouth was first settled in 1769 by the Susquehanna Company of Connecticut and incorporated as a borough in 1866. It lies on the Susquehanna River about 4 miles west of Wilkes-Barre.
Coal shipped from Plymouth as early as 1807, and by the 1850s mining was the main occupation. The railroad reached the borough in 1857 and made it an industrial center.

The Avondale Mine Disaster struck just south of the borough, in Plymouth Township, on September 6, 1869, when a fire at the Avondale colliery, which had a single shaft and no second exit, trapped and killed 108 men and boys, and two would-be rescuers also died, bringing the toll to 110. The tragedy led Pennsylvania to pass the Act of March 3, 1870, the state's first mine safety law reaching the whole anthracite region, which required every mine to have a second way out. Governor Arthur H. James came from Plymouth.
Plymouth had 5,763 residents in 2020. Its housing is dominated by coal-era row and frame homes and remains an affordable, entry-level market on the west side of the valley.
