About Plains Township
Plains Township was organized on November 10, 1851 from parts of Wilkes-Barre and Pittston townships. Its name comes from Jacob's Plains, the level ground along the Susquehanna where a Delaware leader named Jacob once lived.
Anthracite mining and the canals and railroads that carried the coal built the township through the 19th and early 20th centuries. Deep mining wound down across the region after the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster.

Plains Township borders Wilkes-Barre on the northeast and runs from the Susquehanna River up the eastern wall of the valley. Mohegan Pennsylvania on PA 315 opened on November 14, 2006 as Pennsylvania's first casino, and added a 238-room hotel and convention center in 2013. Hall of Fame pitcher Ed Walsh came from the township.
Its 2020 population was 9,808. The housing mixes coal-era homes with postwar and newer subdivisions across a wide range of prices.
