About Pittston Township
Pittston Township was one of the five townships the Susquehanna Company resolved to lay out at Hartford on December 28, 1768. The company was the Connecticut land venture that claimed the Wyoming Valley, and its settlers surveyed the townships on the ground in the years that followed. It was first called Pittstown, named for Sir William Pitt, the English statesman. The township sits in Luzerne County, wrapped around the eastern and southern edges of the city of Pittston, roughly midway between Wilkes-Barre and Scranton.
Coal built the township. Mining patches such as Browntown and McCarthyville, later called Cork Lane, held close to a thousand residents each by the early 1890s, drawing immigrant families to work the anthracite seams. Deep mining carried the local economy for generations, then collapsed after the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster ended most deep anthracite operations across the northern Wyoming Valley.

Northern Pittston Township is home to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport. It was built between 1945 and 1947 on land that included 122 acres donated in 1941 by John B. McDade, father of Congressman Joseph M. McDade. It is the main commercial airport for Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Pocono Mountains.
The township covers about 13.8 square miles and recorded a population of 3,186 at the 2020 census. Its villages include Browntown, Cork Lane, Glendale, and Suscon, and it is served by the Pittston Area School District. Housing runs from coal-era frame homes near the city to newer construction on the higher ground. Its position beside the airport and along the Route 315 corridor keeps it central to the valley's warehouse and distribution economy.
