About Olyphant

Olyphant was first settled in 1798 and incorporated as a borough in 1877. It is named for George Talbot Olyphant, a president of the Delaware and Hudson Canal Company.

Coal built Olyphant. The borough served as headquarters of the Lackawanna Coal Company and grew into a major shipping point on the Delaware and Hudson line. Silk, garment, and cigar making added to the economy. In its coal-era prime it was known as the Queen City of the Mid Valley.

Olyphant is part of the Mid Valley School District. Baseball Hall of Fame umpire Nestor Chylak was born here in 1922, as were actress Patricia Crowley and Loretta Perfectus Walsh, the first woman to enlist in the United States Navy. The Lackawanna River Heritage Trail runs through the borough.

Olyphant sits about 5 miles northeast of Scranton along the Lackawanna River, in Lackawanna County. Its population was 5,383 at the 2020 census. Coal-era homes at modest prices make it a steady close-in market in the Mid Valley.
