About Newfoundland
Newfoundland is a village in Dreher Township, Wayne County. The township incorporated in 1877 and is named for Samuel S. Dreher. Newfoundland is reported to have been settled in 1829.
Timber shaped the local economy, with sawmills and stick and toy factories, and tanneries worked the hemlock bark in the townships around it. Ice harvesting and maple production followed the seasons.

In the early 20th century, farm families turned their homes into summer boarding houses, and those grew into resorts and restaurants. Newfoundland sits about 27 road miles east-southeast of Scranton on Routes 507, 191, and 447, near Promised Land State Park with Lake Wallenpaupack to the northeast. Today it is a rural village serving the vacation-home communities around it, and it hosts the Greene-Dreher-Sterling Fair over the ten days ending the day before Labor Day.
