About Nanticoke
Nanticoke was settled around 1800, incorporated as a borough on January 31, 1874, and became a third-class city in 1926. It is named for the Nanticoke people, an Algonquian-speaking tribe whose name is often translated as tidewater people, some of whom resettled in the Wyoming Valley.
Anthracite made Nanticoke. The city grew into a busy mining community and peaked at just over 26,000 residents in 1930 before the collapse of the coal industry pulled its population down.

Luzerne County Community College opened in Wilkes-Barre in 1967, moved to its Nanticoke campus in 1974, and still runs its main campus in the city.
Nanticoke lies on the Susquehanna River about 8 miles southwest of Wilkes-Barre and is the third-largest city in Luzerne County, with 10,628 residents in 2020. Its housing is mostly coal-era frame homes and doubles at some of the lowest prices in the valley.
