About Mountain Top
Mountain Top is a community on the plateau directly south of the Wyoming Valley, spread across Wright, Fairview, and Rice townships, with the wider Mountain Top area reaching into Dorrance and Nuangola in Luzerne County. It grew up where the Mountain Top, Fairview, and Penobscot railroad stations sat side by side on the plateau. Its 2020 population was 11,489.
The name is literal. The community sits on top of the mountain that rises south of Wilkes-Barre, about eight miles away by PA Route 309, and roughly 16 miles northeast of Hazleton.

Mountain Top is served by the Crestwood School District. It grew around the railroad, including the former Mountain Top Yard that once staged trains climbing out of the valley.
Today it is one of the region's main bedroom communities. Its position between Wilkes-Barre, Hazleton, and the Interstate 81 corridor makes it a commuter hub, and its housing reflects that, with post-war and newer single-family subdivisions on wooded lots.
