About Mount Pocono

Mount Pocono is a borough near the center of Monroe County, perched at nearly 2,000 feet. It incorporated in 1927 after separating from Coolbaugh Township. The post office opened as New Mount Pleasant in 1848, was renamed Forks in 1864 for its road junction, and took the name Mount Pocono in 1886.

The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad built a station here in 1886 and turned the borough into a major summer-resort destination. Passenger service ended in 1965.

The resort era produced landmark hotels, including Mount Airy Lodge, an iconic honeymoon resort that operated from 1898 to 2001 just outside the borough in Paradise Township. Mount Airy Casino Resort opened on the site in 2007. Routes 611, 940, and 196 meet in or near the borough, with Interstate 380 and Interstate 80 close by. Stroudsburg lies about 13 miles southeast, and Scranton is roughly 25 miles northwest. Mount Pocono remains a commercial hub for the surrounding lake and ski communities.
