Milford is the county seat of Pike County, set on the Upper Delaware River in the corner where Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey meet. Thomas Quick, a Dutch immigrant, is regarded as the first settler, arriving around 1733. The village was first called Wells' Ferry for the Wells brothers who ran a ferry and grist mill.
John Biddis laid out the town in the 1790s, and it incorporated as a borough in 1874. Milford sits at the junction of US 6, US 209, and Interstate 84, roughly 70 miles from New York City.
Milford is tied to the birth of American conservation. Grey Towers, a French chateau-style estate, was built in 1886 for James Pinchot and designed by Richard Morris Hunt. His son Gifford Pinchot became the first Chief of the US Forest Service and twice Governor of Pennsylvania. The family gave Grey Towers to the Forest Service in 1963, and President John F. Kennedy dedicated the site that September. The Columns Museum in town holds the Lincoln Flag, said to have cushioned the president's head at Ford's Theatre. Milford's Victorian downtown supports a tourism economy alongside its full-time residents.
