About Luzerne
Luzerne was first settled in 1807 and incorporated as a borough in 1882. It shares its name with the county, both honoring the Chevalier de la Luzerne, a French diplomat who aided the American cause in the Revolution.
In the early 20th century Luzerne combined coal mining with manufacturing, and the borough held mines, a foundry, drill and silk works, and mills. The mines closed with the rest of the valley's anthracite industry.
