About Long Pond
Long Pond is a community in Tunkhannock Township, Monroe County, named for the three-mile stretch where Tunkhannock Creek widens into a long pond. Jasper VanVliet built the first sawmill here in 1820, and logging was the early industry.
The name most people know it by is Pocono Raceway. Dr. Joseph and Dr. Rose Mattioli bought about 1,025 acres of Long Pond farmland in the early 1960s and built a 2.5-mile triangular superspeedway.

The track is called the Tricky Triangle because each of its three turns is modeled on a different speedway. The first major race, a 500-mile IndyCar event in 1971, was won by Mark Donohue. Richard Petty won the first NASCAR Cup race here in 1974. Pocono Raceway switched on a 25-acre, three-megawatt solar farm in 2010, at the time the largest solar-powered sports facility in the world. Long Pond sits off Interstate 80 near Route 115, in the low-density interior Poconos, where motorsports events and vacation homes anchor the local economy.
