About Kingston
Kingston was settled in 1769 and incorporated as a borough on November 23, 1857. It was named after Kingston, Rhode Island. The borough sits on the west bank of the Susquehanna River directly across from Wilkes-Barre.
Coal mining shaped Kingston through the 19th and early 20th centuries and wound down across the valley after the 1959 Knox Mine Disaster. In June 1972 Hurricane Agnes flooded the borough when the Susquehanna overran its banks, and President Richard Nixon toured the damage during the recovery.
