About Jessup
Jessup was settled in the years before 1850 and incorporated in 1877 as the borough of Winton, taking in the villages of Winton and Jessup. It later adopted the Jessup name, honoring Judge William Jessup of Montrose.
Anthracite coal drew a wave of Italian immigrants to Jessup, many from the Gubbio area of Umbria. Coal mining was the backbone of the borough's economy for generations.

Jessup is known for St. Ubaldo Day, the Race of the Saints, a tradition brought from Gubbio in which teams carry tall wooden pillars topped with statues of three saints through the streets. First held here in 1909 and revived in 1976, it continues each Memorial Day weekend, and Jessup and Gubbio are sister cities. Metropolitan Opera baritone Dominic Cossa was born and raised in Jessup.
Jessup sits about 7 miles northeast of Scranton in the Mid Valley, in Lackawanna County, with Moosic Mountain rising to the east. Its population was 4,520 at the 2020 census. Its strong Italian-American heritage and modest coal-era housing define the borough.
