Jermyn began as an early settlement along the Lackawanna River and was chartered as a borough in 1870 under the name Gibsonburg. It was renamed in 1874 for John Jermyn, a coal businessman who served as its first burgess.
Coal mining dominated the borough's economy from the mid-19th century. The area also supported cut-glass works, silk mills, and powder mills during its industrial peak.
Jermyn is known as the birthplace of first aid in America. In 1899, Dr. Matthew Shields taught the first organized first-aid class in the country at the Windsor Hotel, training coal miners in emergency care. The borough is part of the Lakeland School District.
Jermyn sits about 12 miles northeast of Scranton along the Lackawanna River, in Lackawanna County, bordered by Archbald and Mayfield. Its population was about 2,150 at the 2020 census. Coal-era homes on a compact street grid make it an affordable upper-valley borough.
