About Hazleton
Hazleton was incorporated as a borough on April 3, 1851, and as a city on December 4, 1891. The name comes from the hazel bushes that grew along Hazle Creek. At roughly 1,689 feet, it is one of the highest cities in the eastern United States.
Anthracite coal built Hazleton, and the mines drew Italian, Polish, Slovak, Irish, and other immigrant families. The 2020 census counted 29,963 residents, up about 18 percent from 2010. Roughly 63 percent identified as Hispanic or Latino, one of the fastest demographic shifts of any Pennsylvania city.

The modern economy runs on logistics and food processing. The CAN DO industrial parks that ring the city, Humboldt chief among them in neighboring Hazle Township, host Amazon, Cargill, American Eagle Outfitters, and other large employers. In 2006, under Mayor Lou Barletta, the city passed the Illegal Immigration Relief Act Ordinance, which federal courts later struck down as unconstitutional. The Lattimer Massacre of September 10, 1897, in which sheriff's deputies fired on unarmed striking miners and killed nineteen, took place just outside the city in Hazle Township, and actor Jack Palance was born nearby at Lattimer Mines. Penn State Hazleton stands just outside the city at Highacres in Sugarloaf Township, and the large Hazleton Area School District serves the city and its surrounding townships.
Hazleton sits about 21 miles south-southwest of Wilkes-Barre, a 25-mile drive, near the meeting of Luzerne, Schuylkill, and Carbon counties. Its housing stock is dense, with anthracite-era rowhomes and frame houses that remain some of the most affordable in the region. It continues to serve as an immigrant gateway.
