Hawley is a borough in Wayne County, set where three streams meet on the Lackawaxen River. It grew through several names, from Paupack Eddy to Falls Port to Hawleysburg, before shortening to Hawley in 1851. The name honors Irad Hawley, first president of the Pennsylvania Coal Company.
The Delaware and Hudson Canal ran through downtown, and the Pennsylvania Coal Company gravity railroad carried anthracite to Hawley for transfer to canal boats. When the Erie Railroad reached town in 1865, the coal trade shifted to rail.
Hawley became a cut-glass and bluestone town. The former silk mill on the Lackawaxen is often called the largest bluestone building in the world, and the J.S. O'Connor cut-glass factory is listed on the National Register. Today Hawley is a tourism gateway. Lake Wallenpaupack, the largest lake in the Poconos, sits about five miles away. Landmarks include the Hotel Belvidere, open since 1902, and the Ritz Theater.
