About Harding

Harding is a community in Exeter Township, Luzerne County, on the west bank of the Susquehanna River upriver from Pittston. It shares its name with the Harding family, among Exeter Township's first settlers. On June 30, 1778, Stukely and Benjamin Harding were killed in a raid by Loyalists and their Native allies, and the cry "Remember the Hardings" went up, local tradition holds, as men gathered to fight at Wyoming on July 3, 1778.

Exeter Township sits at the northern rim of the Wyoming coal basin, and Harding lies beyond it. Harding grew as farm and forest country rather than a mining town. Exeter Township recorded 2,051 residents in 2020.
