About Hanover Township

Hanover Township was settled in 1772 and organized in 1790. It takes its name from Hanover in Dauphin County, the former home of Captain Lazarus Stewart, who led settlers into the Wyoming Valley and received the land for his service to Connecticut during the Yankee-Pennamite disputes.

Coal mining drove the township through the 19th and 20th centuries, and breakers once stood across the area. The industry faded by the mid-20th century.
