About Greenfield Township

Greenfield Township was organized in January 1816 from the northern part of Abington Township, in what was then Luzerne County. It became part of Lackawanna County when that county was formed in 1878. The township sits in the rural northern reaches of the county.

It covers about 21.5 square miles of farmland, woods, and low ridges at roughly 1,400 feet of elevation, and recorded 2,260 residents at the 2020 census. Interstate 81 runs through the township, with a state rest area near milepost 203. A township ordinance effective January 1, 1999 required every property to post a street number, part of an addressing project the township says was the first of its kind in rural America.

The township belongs to the Lakeland School District. Housing is rural and spread out, with farmhouses, ranch and split-level homes, and newer construction on multi-acre parcels, giving buyers land and quiet within commuting distance of Carbondale and Scranton.
